How many mesotherapy sessions do you need?

Most people need a course of 3–4 mesotherapy sessions, spaced a few weeks apart, followed by maintenance sessions every few months. The skin often looks more hydrated within a week of the first session, but clearer changes in skin quality or hair usually show only after the third or fourth. Hair needs more patience than skin, because it grows slowly.

The exact number is not the same for everyone. It depends on what you want to improve, which mixture of active ingredients is used and how your skin or scalp responds. Our page on mesotherapy in Istanbul describes the four treatments offered: skin, salmon DNA, collagen and hair mesotherapy.

Why a single session is rarely enough

Each session places very small amounts of vitamins, amino acids, hyaluronic acid or other active ingredients into the middle layer of the skin (the dermis) or into the scalp. The amounts are deliberately small, and the skin responds to them gradually rather than all at once. A single session can leave the skin looking fresher for a while, mainly because of the extra hydration, but this effect fades.

Changes in texture, fine lines, elasticity or hair density depend on repeated treatment over time. That is why mesotherapy is planned as a course from the start, and why judging it after one session usually leads to the wrong conclusion.

What a typical course looks like

  1. Assessment and first session: your skin or scalp is examined, the goal is agreed and the mixture is chosen. The injections take about 30–45 minutes, with a numbing cream when needed.

  2. The days after each session: small bumps, redness or tiny bruises may be visible for 24–48 hours, and you can go back to work the same day.

  3. Sessions two and three, a few weeks apart: before each one, progress is reviewed and the plan is adjusted if needed.

  4. After the third or fourth session: this is the point at which the result is assessed properly and maintenance is planned.

The spacing matters. Sessions are a few weeks apart so that the skin or scalp has time to settle and respond before the next treatment. Moving them closer together does not make the result appear sooner.

Skin and hair follow different timetables

Skin

Hydration is usually the first change, often visible within the first week. Glow and smoothness tend to build with each session, while fine lines and texture need the full course before they can be judged fairly. Salmon DNA (polynucleotide) and collagen mesotherapy aim at elasticity and firmness, which change slowly, so it is wise to wait until the course is complete before deciding whether they have worked.

Hair

Hair grows about a centimetre a month, and each hair follows its own growth cycle. Changes in density therefore take months to become visible, even when the treatment is working. Less shedding may be noticed before any change in thickness, and a hair course is therefore judged over a longer period than a skin course. Before a hair course is planned, the cause of the hair loss is assessed, because not every type of hair loss responds to mesotherapy.

What changes the number of sessions you need

  • Your starting point: very dry, dull or sun-damaged skin usually needs the full course, while skin in good condition may mainly need maintenance.

  • Your goal: a fresher look for a particular occasion is a different aim from a lasting improvement in texture or hair.

  • The type of mesotherapy: hydration from a vitamin and hyaluronic acid mixture shows sooner than changes in elasticity or hair.

  • Sun and smoking: both keep damaging the skin’s supporting fibres, so results fade faster and maintenance may be needed more often.

  • The cause of hair loss: if a medical cause such as a thyroid problem or iron deficiency is left untreated, extra sessions cannot make up for it.

  • Your individual response: some people see changes earlier than others, which is why progress is reviewed at each visit.

Maintenance after the course

Once the course is complete, the improvement does not stay forever, because the skin keeps ageing and hair keeps going through its growth cycles. Maintenance sessions every few months help to hold the result. How often you need them depends on how quickly your result fades, your skin and your lifestyle, and this becomes clearer after the first course.

Mesotherapy also suits people who want to keep their skin quality up before or after other treatments. Dr. Semih Yıldız plans each treatment around the needs of your skin or scalp, so the maintenance rhythm is agreed individually rather than fixed in advance.

There is also an honest limit. If you see no worthwhile change after a complete course, continuing with the same treatment is unlikely to help, and it makes more sense to review the goal and consider other options.

Planning sessions around trips to Istanbul

Each session needs about one day in Istanbul. There is no hospital stay, and you can return to your usual routine the same day. Because the sessions are a few weeks apart, a full course means either several short trips or linking sessions to visits you are making anyway.

Mesotherapy can also be combined with other treatments or surgery planned during the same visit. Raise this at the online consultation, so that the plan fits the time you actually have. Squeezing every session into a single stay is not a shortcut, because the skin needs time between treatments.

Between visits, follow-up continues remotely through photos and video calls. The treatment steps, preparation advice and possible side effects are summarised on our mesotherapy treatment page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have just one mesotherapy session?

Yes. A single session can make the skin look fresher and more hydrated for a short time, which some people choose before a special occasion. Lasting changes in texture, fine lines or hair need a course of sessions, so one treatment on its own is a short-term boost rather than a long-term plan.

What happens if I stop the maintenance sessions?

Nothing harmful happens. The improvement fades gradually over the following months, and your skin or hair simply continues to change as it would have done without treatment. You can start again later; how many sessions are needed then depends on how much of the effect has faded.

How long does each mesotherapy session take?

The injections themselves usually take about 30–45 minutes. When a numbing cream is used, it needs a short time to work beforehand, so allow some extra time for the visit. You can return to work the same day, although some redness may be visible for about a day.
