What is liposuction?
Liposuction, also called lipo or body contouring, removes selected fat through small incisions using a thin cannula. Common areas include the abdomen, waist, flanks, back, hips, thighs, upper arms, chest and under the chin.
Liposuction is not an obesity treatment or a substitute for weight loss. It is designed for localised fat in people with a stable weight, and results last when weight stays stable.
Who is a good candidate?
- Healthy adults with a stable weight close to their goal
- People with localised fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise
- Patients with reasonable skin elasticity, so the skin can adapt to the new contour
- Anyone with realistic expectations who can stop smoking before and after surgery
If you have significant loose skin, liposuction alone may not give a smooth result. A skin-tightening procedure such as a tummy tuck, arm lift or thigh lift may then be needed instead of, or together with, liposuction.
Liposuction techniques
The technique and the number of areas are chosen individually. More treatment is not automatically better or safer.
Vaser liposuction
Ultrasound energy loosens the fat before it is removed, which allows smoother, more controlled contouring. Vaser liposuction is used as standard.
High-definition liposuction
An advanced form of Vaser liposuction that sculpts around the natural muscle lines of the abdomen, flanks and back for a more athletic look. It suits patients with a low body-fat percentage.
Lipo 360
Circumferential contouring around the trunk, usually including the abdomen, waist, flanks and lower back, to refine the waistline from every angle.
Liposuction with fat transfer
The fat removed can be purified and transferred to the buttocks (Brazilian butt lift), the breasts or the face in the same operation.

How the operation is performed
- Planning: your photos, medical history and goals are reviewed and the treatment areas are agreed before the day of surgery.
- Marking: the areas are marked while you are standing, so the natural contours can be followed.
- Anaesthesia: the operation is performed under general anaesthesia or sedation and usually takes 1–4 hours, depending on the number of areas.
- Fat removal: a tumescent solution is infiltrated, the fat is loosened with Vaser energy and removed through small incisions.
- Closing: the small incisions are closed and a compression garment is fitted.
- Aftercare: most patients stay one night in hospital for monitoring before moving to their hotel.
Recovery timeline
First 2–3 days: Swelling, bruising and soreness are strongest. Gentle walking starts early and discomfort is usually controlled with simple painkillers.
Around day 5–7: Wound checks are completed and most patients are cleared to fly home.
Weeks 1–2: Most patients return to desk work and light daily activities.
Weeks 4–6: The compression garment is worn for about 4–6 weeks and exercise is gradually resumed.
Month 3: Most of the swelling has settled and the new contour is clearly visible.
Months 3–6: The final result appears as residual swelling resolves and the skin adapts.
How to prepare
- Keep your weight stable in the months before surgery.
- Stop smoking and nicotine products at least 4 weeks before and after surgery.
- Tell us about all medicines and supplements; blood thinners, aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil and some herbal products may need to be paused.
- Send clear front, side and back photos of the areas you want treated for the online assessment.
- Plan about 5–7 days in Istanbul and 1–2 weeks away from work.
Risks and possible complications
Every operation carries risk. Possible complications of liposuction include:
- Bleeding, infection or fluid collection (seroma)
- Contour irregularity or asymmetry
- Prolonged swelling
- Changes in skin sensation or skin colour
- Loose skin
- Blood clots
- The need for revision surgery
