What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are gel injections, most commonly made of hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in the skin. They add volume, shape features and soften folds and hollows.

Results are visible immediately, and hyaluronic acid fillers are gradually absorbed by the body over about 6–12 months. They can also be dissolved if needed.

Who is a good candidate?

  • Adults who want fuller or better-defined lips
  • People with volume loss in the cheeks or under the eyes
  • Patients who want a more defined chin or jawline
  • Anyone who wants to soften nasolabial folds or marionette lines without surgery

Fillers are not used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or over an active skin infection.

How the treatment is performed

  1. Consultation: your goals and medical history are reviewed and the treatment areas are agreed.
  2. Preparation: the skin is cleaned and a numbing cream is applied when needed.
  3. Treatment: the filler is injected with a fine needle or cannula, usually in 30–45 minutes.
  4. Aftercare: you can return to your daily routine immediately, following a few simple instructions.

After the treatment

First 2–3 days: Mild swelling, tenderness or small bruises are common, especially on the lips.

Week 1: Most of the swelling has settled.

Week 2: The filler has settled into its final shape and a check-up can be arranged if needed.

Months 6–12: The filler is gradually absorbed and the treatment can be repeated.

How to prepare

  • Avoid alcohol and, if possible, blood-thinning painkillers for a few days before treatment to reduce bruising.
  • Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Tell us about previous filler or permanent filler treatments.
  • Tell us if you have a history of cold sores, especially before lip filler.

Risks and possible side effects

Fillers are safe when performed by an experienced doctor. Possible side effects include:

  • Swelling, redness or bruising
  • Lumps or asymmetry that may need a touch-up
  • Infection
  • Rarely, blockage of a blood vessel, which needs urgent treatment

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with a special enzyme if needed, which adds an extra layer of safety.
