Most people return to desk work about a week after a brow lift. Swelling and bruising around the forehead and eyes peak in the first 2–3 days, the stitches are removed around day 7, and most of the bruising has faded by weeks 2–3. The scars depend on the technique: in the hair behind the hairline, in the hair of the temples, or along the upper edge of the eyebrow.
The stages below follow the aftercare for a brow lift in Istanbul, where most patients go back to their hotel on the day of surgery. The technique planned for you shapes both where your scars will sit and some details of your recovery, so it helps to know which one it is.
Where the scars sit with each technique
Endoscopic brow lift
A few short incisions are made behind the hairline, and the brow and forehead are lifted with the help of a camera. The scars lie within the hair, and once healed they are usually covered by your hair as it falls naturally.
Temporal (lateral) brow lift
Small incisions are hidden in the hair of the temples and are used to lift the outer part of the brow. As the hair around them grows, they are usually not visible.
Direct brow lift
Skin is removed just above the eyebrow, and the scar runs along the upper edge of the brow hairs. It is the only brow lift scar that sits outside the hair, which is why this technique is mainly used for people with thick brows that can hide it. The line is pink at first and fades gradually, and once it has healed, brow make-up can help to camouflage it.
Wherever they are, the scars mature slowly. They are part of what settles during the 3–6 months before the final result, and they keep softening after that.
The first week in Istanbul
Day of surgery: you return to your hotel. The forehead feels tight and your head may feel slightly heavy.
Days 1–3: swelling and bruising around the forehead and eyes reach their peak. Keep your head raised, also at night, and use cold compresses.
Days 4–6: the swelling starts to settle, and bruising can drift down onto the eyelids and cheeks before it fades.
Around day 7: the stitches are removed and most patients are cleared to fly home.
Pain is usually well controlled with the painkillers you are given. A band of tightness across the forehead or a pressure-like headache is common in the first days and eases as the swelling goes down. Bending forward and lifting increase swelling, so keep them to a minimum during this week.
Numbness, tightness and itching
Numbness of the forehead or scalp is common after a brow lift, because the small sensory nerves that run upwards from the brow are stretched when the tissues are lifted. Sensation usually returns gradually over weeks to months. As it comes back, tingling, brief shooting sensations or itching are normal signs that the nerves are recovering. In a small number of people, an area of numbness can remain.
Brow movement may also feel weaker for a while. Temporary weakness is a known effect of lifting the brow tissues, and permanent weakness is rare. A feeling of tightness when you raise your eyebrows is normal in the first weeks and softens as the tissues settle.
Caring for incisions in the hair
Washing: your team will tell you when you may wash your hair. Gentle washing with a mild shampoo is usually allowed within the first days, without scrubbing over the incisions.
Heat: a numb scalp does not sense heat properly, so use a hairdryer on a cool setting and keep curling tongs and straighteners away from the incisions for several weeks.
Hairstyles: avoid tight ponytails, clips and headbands that pull on the healing incisions.
Colouring: leave hair dye and chemical treatments until the incisions have fully healed, and ask before booking a hairdresser.
Some temporary thinning of the hair right next to the incisions can occur, and it usually grows back over the following months. Visible scars or lasting hair loss along the incisions are among the possible risks, which is one reason why the incisions are placed and closed with care.
Back to work, exercise and daily life
Most people return to desk work after about a week, once the bruising has faded enough, so plan about 7 days in Istanbul and about 1 week away from work. Most normal activities resume in weeks 2–3. Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and long periods of bending forward are built up gradually, because they raise blood pressure in the head and increase swelling.
By month 1, most of the swelling has settled and the brows look natural, although they keep settling until the final result at 3–6 months. Protecting the scars from strong sun during the first months helps them fade evenly.
Signs to report to the surgical team
Contact the team if you notice:
swelling on one side that increases quickly, feels tense and is painful
bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure
fever, spreading redness, warmth or discharge from an incision
an incision that opens
any sudden change in your vision
Before surgery, the new brow position is marked while you sit upright, after a face-to-face consultation with Dr. Semih Yıldız, and follow-up continues by photos and video calls once you are home. The techniques, risks and full timeline are on our brow lift page.
Frequently asked questions
When can I wear make-up after a brow lift?
Make-up away from the incisions, for example to cover bruising around the eyes, is usually possible once the stitches have been removed around day 7. Make-up or brow products directly on a scar, as after a direct brow lift, should wait until the incision has fully healed. Your team will confirm when it is safe in your case.
Will my hairline change after a brow lift?
An endoscopic brow lift moves the forehead tissues upwards, which can raise the hairline slightly. This is one reason why hairline and forehead height are assessed before the technique is chosen. A temporal brow lift works only at the outer brow and a direct brow lift works at the brow itself, so neither changes the hairline at the centre of the forehead.
How soon can I fly home after a brow lift?
Most patients are cleared to fly around day 7, once the stitches have been removed and the incisions checked. Flying does not harm the result, but it helps to keep your head upright, drink enough water and avoid lifting heavy luggage yourself. After you return home, follow-up continues through photos and video calls.
