Body contouring recovery and scars: realistic expectations

Recovery after body contouring takes longer than after liposuction alone. Expect 1–2 nights in hospital (two nights if your plan includes a tummy tuck), about 7–10 days in Istanbul, 2–3 weeks before desk work and around 6 weeks before physical work. Scars are the trade-off for removing loose skin: they are placed where clothing usually covers them and fade over 6–12 months, but they never disappear completely.
How demanding your recovery is depends on how many areas are treated and whether skin is removed or only fat. The timings above follow the plan for body contouring in Istanbul, and the sections below explain what lies behind them.
Why recovery takes longer than after liposuction
Liposuction works through incisions a few millimetres long. A tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift or back lift involves long incisions closed in layers, often several in one operation. More tissue is healing at once, the body has to rebuild strength and blood, and moving freely takes longer because stretching puts tension on fresh wounds. Tiredness is common for several weeks after a long operation, even when the pain has eased.
The first weeks, stage by stage
In hospital (1–2 nights, two nights with a tummy tuck): swelling, bruising and tightness are strongest. Painkillers keep you comfortable, and short walks start early to protect against blood clots.
At the hotel: you return for check-ups and wound care. If your plan includes a tummy tuck, the drains are removed during this period. Lymphatic drainage massage can be arranged if it suits your procedures.
Day 7–10: once the wound checks are complete, most patients are cleared to fly home. Walk the aisle when you can and drink water during the flight.
Weeks 2–3: desk work and light daily activities become realistic.
Week 6 onwards: the compression garment, worn for about 6 weeks, comes off, physical work becomes possible, and sport is resumed gradually over the following weeks.
Where the scars lie
Every procedure that removes skin leaves a scar roughly as long as the area it treats. The treatment areas are marked on the day of surgery, after your face-to-face consultation with Dr. Semih Yıldız, and each scar is positioned so that clothing or natural creases hide it as much as possible.
Abdomen
A tummy tuck leaves a low scar across the abdomen, just above the pubic area, so it sits under underwear or a bikini, plus a scar around the belly button after a full tummy tuck. Extended techniques after major weight loss add a vertical scar (fleur-de-lis) or continue the scar around the waist (belt lipectomy).
Arms
An arm lift scar runs along the inner side of the upper arm, from the armpit towards the elbow. It is hidden when your arms are at your sides and visible when they are raised.
Thighs and back
A thigh lift scar lies in the groin crease and, when more skin is removed, also runs down the inner thigh. This area is under constant movement and friction, so scars here are more prone to widening or shifting. A back lift scar runs across the upper back and is usually planned to lie where the back strap of a bra or bikini sits.
How scars change over the first year
In the first weeks a scar is a fine line. Over the next two to three months it often becomes redder, firmer and slightly raised while healing is at its most active. This is normal and tends to worry people more than it should. From then on it gradually softens, flattens and fades, and by 6–12 months most scars are paler and flatter, although some keep improving after the first year.
Scars heal less well under tension, in smokers, after infection or delayed healing, and in people prone to thick scars (hypertrophic scars or keloids), which are more common in darker skin. What helps:
Silicone gel or silicone sheets once the wound has fully closed, used daily for several months
Sun protection on the scars for at least the first year, because UV light can darken them
No heavy lifting or strong stretching in the early weeks, as both pull on the scar
Gentle scar massage once healed, if the team recommends it
Small areas of slow healing, often where two scars meet or where tension is highest, are not unusual after extensive skin removal. They usually close with dressings over a few weeks, and a scar that stays wide can be revised later if needed.
Help at home makes a real difference
The first weeks after you fly home are easier with practical help:
Someone to stay with you for the first days, and help with shopping, cooking, children and pets for longer
Clothes that open at the front or are loose and soft, particularly after an arm or thigh lift
Everyday items within easy reach, so you do not need to stretch or bend
A plan for remote follow-up, since photos and video calls let the team check your wounds after you return home
Low mood or tearfulness in the first weeks is common after a long operation and usually passes as your energy returns. If it persists, talk to the team or your own doctor.
When to call the team
Contact the surgical team promptly if you notice fever, spreading redness or warmth around a wound, cloudy or foul-smelling discharge, a wound that opens, sudden painful swelling on one side, or pain and swelling in one calf. Breathlessness or chest pain needs emergency care at once.
The result at 12 months
Around month 3 most of the swelling has settled and the new contour is clearly visible. Between months 6 and 12 the final result appears as the scars mature and fade. Swelling can last longer in the lower abdomen and, after a thigh lift, in the legs. The removed skin and fat do not come back, but ageing and weight changes continue, so a stable weight keeps the result. Each procedure in a plan has its own details, described in our overview of body contouring procedures.
Frequently asked questions
Will I need drains after body contouring?
It depends on the procedures. Drains are used after a tummy tuck and are removed during your stay in Istanbul, before the flight home. Liposuction on its own usually does not need them. The team will tell you beforehand whether your plan includes drains, so you know what to expect after surgery.
Can scars be improved later if they stay wide or thick?
Often, yes. Most scars fade considerably over 12 months with silicone and sun protection. If a scar is still raised, thick or wide once it has matured, options include steroid injections for raised scars, laser treatment or a small scar revision operation. These are considered only after the scar has had time to settle.
When can I go back to the gym after body contouring?
Walking starts straight away, but structured training waits. Light activity builds up over the first weeks, and sport is resumed gradually from about week 6, once the compression garment phase is over. Exercises that stretch or strain fresh scars, such as heavy core work after a tummy tuck or deep lunges after a thigh lift, come last.
